Meta: Don’t forget that the Medal of Honor multiplayer demo goes live on the fourth, but you can download the client today. Of course, EA has collectively proven themselves to be pussies by bowing to media pressure and changing names around, but that’s for another day.
Today’s “comic” really isn’t a comic at all, it’s more a half-pictoral journal of one of the Escapist’s writers, Shamus Young, as he played Champions Online and LOTRO. For those of you who have heard of it, Young was also the creator of DM of the Rings. Of all the things that I found to be good this week, Plays ended up being at the top, so here it is.
In a nutshell, Young plays the games and pokes fun at the insanity of the MMO design, notable in the two MMOs that they take place in because they are really quite bad.
It’s all done in satire, of course, with the Young’s avatar playing the “straight-man” in the insanity of the MMO world. Normal gaming comic fodder.
However, it’s interesting how Young draws attention to both the horrible designs that MMOs can create, as well as the normally accepted ideas of the MMO game. It’s rather fascinating to see how he deconstructs things that most players would take for granted and shines a light into the dark recesses of horrible design.
Be warned, it is in article form so it’s more like a written post with lots of pictures. Thus, those of you with short attention spans may want to stay away. I say this because, let’s face it, most people on the internet see text and automatically think “tl:dr”, then ignore it. But enough about my traffic figures, let’s move on.
I really don’t have more to say, a result of a foggy head and the insubstantial source material. Let it suffice to say that Plays is a fairly interesting series, one that made me “lol” quite a few times. For your viewing pleasure, I present it. Cheers. Now I must email Valve and tell them to stop breaking TF2.
